Program Spotlights

  • Project Backpack

Project Backpack, launched in 2019 in the Imvepi Refugee Settlement, helps children learn to read 16X faster using technology, personalized learning, caregiver support, feedback, and play.

  • Teacher Development

Pangea’s Teacher Development Programs equip educators to teach reading effectively and foster gender equity, ensuring every child has the chance to thrive.

  • Pangea Digital Library

When children see themselves in the stories they read, they’re inspired to learn. From 2017–2023, Pangea published 160+ culturally relevant children’s books—used in our Project Backpack and Teacher Development programs, and now available to you!

"My children learned so fast. Letter names. Letter sounds. They are reading stories and can now explore new parts of their studies."

Our Results

Project Backpack

  • In 2020, Pangea conducted a nine-month pilot with 224 South Sudanese refugee learners, randomly assigned into two groups: a Treatment Group (21 families) that received iPads, instruction, and biweekly feedback; and a Control Group (21 families) that received iPads but no guided instruction.

  • Learner progress was measured using the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA), aligned with Grade 2 benchmarks. 88% of children in the treatment group mastered letter knowledge (up from 6.7% at baseline assessments), and 55% became functionally literate, reading over 60 words per minute. Improvements were also recorded in vocabulary, comprehension, and reading self-confidence.

While control group testing has not been completed since this initial study, EGRA results have continued to follow this incredible trend.
